Applications will also be accepted from graduate students who expect to have the Ph.D. in hand prior to taking up residence at Dumbarton Oaks; (c) Summer Fellowships: for Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, or Landscape Architecture scholars on any level of advancement, beyond the first year of graduate (post-baccalaureate) study; (d) fellowship candidates must be in their last year of undergraduate education or have a recently awarded B.A.; they must have completed at least one year of ancient or medieval Greek (those called for an interview will be required to take a short examination in Greek); and they must be applicants to a doctoral programme in any field or area of Byzantine studies. The Bliss Prize Fellowship is restricted to candidates currently enrolled in or recent graduates of U.S. or Canadian universities or colleges or to American or Canadian citizens who are enrolled at non-North American universities or colleges; (e) project grants are limited to applicants holding a doctorate or the equivalent, and are awarded on the basis of 1) ability and preparation of the principal project personnel including knowledge of the requisite languages) and 2) interest and value of the project to the specific field of study. Applications are reviewed by a committee of scholars in the relevant field.
Duration: (a) and (b) full academic year, although semesters are considered; (c) periods of 6 to 9 weeks (between 15 June and 15 August); (d) 2 academic years.
Value: (a), (b) Fellowship awards range from an equivalent of approximately US$21,000 for an unmarried Junior Fellow to a maximum of US$39,300 for a Fellow from abroad accompanied by family members. Support includes a stipend of US$14,080 for a Junior Fellow or US$25,655 for a Fellow for the full academic year; housing or housing allowance; possibility of contribution towards family; health and travel expenses; (c) Summer Fellowships for periods of six to nine weeks. Awards provide a maintenance allowance of US$215 per week; housing in a Dumbarton Oaks apartment or at the Fellows Building; lunch on weekdays; Dumbarton Oaks's contribution to health insurance; and travel expense reimbursement if necessary; (d) his award is intended to provide encouragement, assistance, and training to outstanding college seniors who plan to enter the field of Byzantine studies. The Bliss Prize Fellowship covers graduate school tuition and living expenses for two academic years; Summer travel (up to a maximum of US$5,000) for the intervening Summer to areas that are important for an understanding of Byzantine civilization and culture; (e) the normal range of awards is US$3,000 to US$10,000 for archaeological research, as well as for the recovery, recording, and analysis of materials that would otherwise be lost.
